Staying in touch with your child when working away from home

On Behalf of | May 12, 2022 | family law |

Throughout your marriage, you were able to do most of your work locally and get home every night to see the kids. Post-divorce, your finances have taken a hit and you need to spend some time working away.

You’re worried that this will impact your relationship with your child. You don’t want to drift apart. Outlined below are some useful tips for staying in touch with your child when working afar.

Utilize technology

20 years ago, it would’ve been difficult to even make a phone call to your child from an oil platform. Technology has advanced so much in recent years though, and you can use it to your advantage. If you’re permitted, take photos of what you are up to while you are away and share them with your child. Whenever you get the chance, try to make a video call. This can help close the distance somewhat, as your child sees your expressions as well as hears your voice.

Send gifts or packages

If you’re working somewhere new and interesting, why not try and send a gift package to your child? If you’re given a rest day to visit the local sites onshore, check the stores out for interesting souvenirs. Children love gifts, especially novel items that clearly have a lot of thought behind them.

You work at a distance to provide for your child and you have every right to see them and stay in contact. If you’re finding this difficult post-divorce, or your ex is refusing to cooperate, then you may want to get in touch with someone who can help to assert your legal rights
